Suez
Suez (Arabic: السويس as-Suways ; Egyptian Arabic: es-Sewēs, el-Sewēs pronounced [esseˈweːs]) is a seaport city (population ca. 497,000) in north-eastern Egypt, located on the north coast of the Gulf of Suez (a branch of the Red Sea), near the southern terminus of the Suez Canal, having the same boundaries as Suez governorate. It has three harbors, Adabya, Ain Sukhna and Port Tawfiq, and extensive port facilities. Together they form a metropolitan area. Railway lines and highways connect the city with Cairo, Port Said, and Ismailia. Suez has a petrochemical plant, and its oil refineries have pipelines carrying the finished product to Cairo.
History
Early Islamic era
In the 7th century AD a town named "Kolzum" stood just north of the site of present-day Suez and served as eastern terminus of a canal built by Amr ibn al-'As linking the Nile River and the Red Sea. Kolzum's trade fell following the closure of the canal in 770 by the second Abbasid caliph al-Mansur to prevent his enemies in Arabia from accessing supplies from Egypt and the lands north of it. Nonetheless, the town benefited from the trade that remained between Egypt and Arabia. By 780 al-Mansur's successor al-Mahdi restored part of the canal. The Qarmatians led by Hasan ibn Ahmad defeated a Fatimid army headed by Gawhar al-Siqilli at Kolzum in 971 and thereby captured the town. Following his defeat in Cairo by al-Siqilli at the end of that year, Hasan and his forces retreated to Arabia via Kolzum. Suez was situated nearby and served as a source of drinking water for Kolzum according to Arab traveler al-Muqaddasi who visited in 986.

Suez (film)
Suez is an American film released on October 28, 1938 by 20th Century Fox, with Darryl F. Zanuck in charge of production, directed by Allan Dwan and starring Tyrone Power, Loretta Young and Annabella. It is very loosely based on events surrounding the construction, between 1859 and 1869, of the Suez Canal, planned and supervised by French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps. The screenplay is so highly fictionalized that, upon the film's release in France, de Lesseps' descendants sued (unsuccessfully) for libel.
It was nominated for three Academy Awards: Cinematography (Peverell Marley), Original Music Score (uncredited Louis Silvers) and Sound Recording (uncredited Edmund H. Hansen).
Plot
During a tennis match in Paris between Ferdinand de Lesseps (Tyrone Power) and his friend Vicomte Rene de Latour (Joseph Schildkraut), the enthusiastic admiration of Countess Eugenie de Montijo (Loretta Young) for de Lesseps attracts the attention of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (Leon Ames). Bonaparte sees to it that both she and de Lesseps are invited to his reception. At the party, a fortuneteller predicts that Eugenie will have a troubled life, but also wear a crown, and that de Lesseps will dig a ditch. Entranced by Eugenie's beauty, Bonaparte arranges for his romantic rival to be assigned to a diplomatic post in Egypt, joining his father, Count Mathieu de Lesseps (Henry Stephenson), the Consul-General. De Lesseps impulsively asks Eugenie to marry him immediately, but she turns him down.

After completing our port calls in South Europe, we're now sailing towards Egypt from where we'll transit the Suez Canal.
The Canal was opened in the year 1869 thus drastically reducing the distance between Europe and countries to the East of it!
Approximately speaking, the canal has cut the travel time between Europe and Asia from 22 days to well under 22 hours,
Prior to this, the ships had to go all the way around Africa to cover this distance! Taking the canal route saves the ships not just time, but also a lot of money in terms of fuel costs!
But!... not all these savings are for free. The ships transiting the canal are supposed to pay a fee. Infact, a heavy fee!
Just in the year 2020, around 19,000 ships crossd the the Suez Canal, and generated a total revenue of 5.9 billion USD!
Actually, the fee which is to be paid is not a flat fee. It is calculated based on a variety of factors, for example, the type of ship, the Gross tonnage, the Net tonnage, the Suez Tonnage etc.
All the calculations are done in advance by the SCA i.e. the Suez Canal Authority.
Since I sail on container ship, so, I know for a fact that the charges also depend on the number of containers we are carrying, whether we're loaded with cargo or we're on ballast and so on.
Anyway, so to find out how much the ship has to pay up, go to this website (link in description) and enter the relevant details.
I'm going to fill out the details and information specific to my ship. Once that's done, just click on Calculate.
You'll see the invoice with the grand total. Ours is a bit North of $300,000 - that is for one crossing! but there's also a 65% discount running these days, the reason for which is the slowdown in global economies due to the pandemic.
As the global markets struggle and try to limp back to normal, there is not much cargo that needs delivery right now, and there has been a big slump in demand as well!
So, many ship owners are contemplating the alternate routes i.e. all the way around Africa, and the discount from the Suez canal authorities to prevent the ship owners from doing so!

The Suez Canal may be open again, but the battle over damages from the waterway’s longest closure in almost half a century is just beginning.
With cargoes delayed for weeks if not months, the blockage could unleash a flood of claims by everyone affected, from shipping lines to manufacturers and oil producers.
“The legal issues are so enormous,” said Alexis Cahalan, a partner at Norton White in Sydney, which specializes in transport law. “If you can imagine the variety of cargoes that are there -- everything from oil, grain, consumer goods like refrigerators to perishable goods -- that is where the enormity of the claims may not be known for a time.”
The giant Ever Given container ship was pried from the bank on Monday, and traffic through the canal -- which connects the Mediterranean and the Red Sea -- resumed soon after. The blockage began when the vessel slammed into the wall last Tuesday and was the canal’s longest since it was shut for eight years following the 1967 Six-Day War. The incident offered a reminder of the fragility of global trade infrastructure and threats to supply lines already stretched by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Ever Given, which moved north from the southern part of the canal where it ran aground to the Great Bitter Lake, is being inspected for damage. Those checks will determine whether the vessel can resume its scheduled service and what happens to the cargo, Taiwan’s Evergreen Line, the ship’s charterer, said in a statement.
Egyptian authorities were desperate to get traffic flowing again through the waterway that’s a conduit for about 12% of world trade and around 1 million barrels of oil a day.
A backlog of hundreds of ships built up. There were 421 waiting to transit through the canal at 8:00 a.m. local time, according to Inchcape Shipping Services, a maritime services provider. The waterway usually handles around 50 a day, but will probably transit significantly more than that in the coming weeks.
“Coordinating the logistics of who gets to go through first and how that’s going to be sorted out, I think the Egyptians have quite a job on their hands,” John Wobensmith, chief executive officer of Genco Shipping & Trading Ltd., said Tuesday in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

Because of inflation around the world, Egypt has announced that it's raising the transit fees for ships passing through one of the main arteries for world trade, the Suez Canal.
The Suez Canal Authority said Saturday that fees are going up starting January 1st next year... by 15 percent for tankers carrying oil and petroleum products... and 10 percent for dry bulk carriers and cruise ships.
The head of that agency, Osama Rabie, said inflation has increased the cost of the canal's operation.
Egypt is also running low on the foreign currency it needs for imports.
The Suez Canal handles about 10 percent of global trade, including 7 percent of the world's oil.

After completing our port calls in South Europe, we're now sailing towards Egypt from where we'll transit the Suez Canal.
The Canal was opened in the year 1869 thus drastically reducing the distance between Europe and countries to the East of it!
Approximately speaking, the canal has cut the travel time between Europe and Asia from 22 days to well under 22 hours,
Prior to this, the ships had to go all the way around Africa to cover this distance! Taking the canal route saves the ships not just time, but also a lot of money in terms of fuel costs!
But!... not all these savings are for free. The ships transiting the canal are supposed to pay a fee. Infact, a heavy fee!
Just in the year 2020, around 19,000 ships crossd the the Suez Canal, and generated a total revenue of 5.9 billion USD!
Actually, the fee which is to be paid is not a flat fee. It is calculated based on a variety of factors, for example, the type of ship, the Gross tonnage, the Net tonnage, the Suez Tonnage etc.
All the calculations are done in advance by the SCA i.e. the Suez Canal Authority.
Since I sail on container ship, so, I know for a fact that the charges also depend on the number of containers we are carrying, whether we're loaded with cargo or we're on ballast and so on.
Anyway, so to find out how much the ship has to pay up, go to this website (link in description) and enter the relevant details.
I'm going to fill out the details and information specific to my ship. Once that's done, just click on Calculate.
You'll see the invoice with the grand total. Ours is a bit North of $300,000 - that is for one crossing! but there's also a 65% discount running these days, the reason for which is the slowdown in global economies due to the pandemic.
As the global markets struggle and try to limp back to normal, there is not much cargo that needs delivery right now, and there has been a big slump in demand as well!
So, many ship owners are contemplating the alternate routes i.e. all the way around Africa, and the discount from the Suez canal authorities to prevent the ship owners from doing so!

The Suez Canal may be open again, but the battle over damages from the waterway’s longest closure in almost half a century is just beginning.
With cargoes delayed for weeks if not months, the blockage could unleash a flood of claims by everyone affected, from shipping lines to manufacturers and oil producers.
“The legal issues are so enormous,” said Alexis Cahalan, a partner at Norton White in Sydney, which specializes in transport law. “If you can imagine the variety of cargoes that are there -- everything from oil, grain, consumer goods like refrigerators to perishable goods -- that is where the enormity of the claims may not be known for a time.”
The giant Ever Given container ship was pried from the bank on Monday, and traffic through the canal -- which connects the Mediterranean and the Red Sea -- resumed soon after. The blockage began when the vessel slammed into the wall last Tuesday and was the canal’s longest since it was shut for eight years following the 1967 Six-Day War. The incident offered a reminder of the fragility of global trade infrastructure and threats to supply lines already stretched by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Ever Given, which moved north from the southern part of the canal where it ran aground to the Great Bitter Lake, is being inspected for damage. Those checks will determine whether the vessel can resume its scheduled service and what happens to the cargo, Taiwan’s Evergreen Line, the ship’s charterer, said in a statement.
Egyptian authorities were desperate to get traffic flowing again through the waterway that’s a conduit for about 12% of world trade and around 1 million barrels of oil a day.
A backlog of hundreds of ships built up. There were 421 waiting to transit through the canal at 8:00 a.m. local time, according to Inchcape Shipping Services, a maritime services provider. The waterway usually handles around 50 a day, but will probably transit significantly more than that in the coming weeks.
“Coordinating the logistics of who gets to go through first and how that’s going to be sorted out, I think the Egyptians have quite a job on their hands,” John Wobensmith, chief executive officer of Genco Shipping & Trading Ltd., said Tuesday in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

Because of inflation around the world, Egypt has announced that it's raising the transit fees for ships passing through one of the main arteries for world trade, the Suez Canal.
The Suez Canal Authority said Saturday that fees are going up starting January 1st next year... by 15 percent for tankers carrying oil and petroleum products... and 10 percent for dry bulk carriers and cruise ships.
The head of that agency, Osama Rabie, said inflation has increased the cost of the canal's operation.
Egypt is also running low on the foreign currency it needs for imports.
The Suez Canal handles about 10 percent of global trade, including 7 percent of the world's oil.

Suez
Suez (Arabic: السويس as-Suways ; Egyptian Arabic: es-Sewēs, el-Sewēs pronounced [esseˈweːs]) is a seaport city (population ca. 497,000) in north-eastern Egypt, located on the north coast of the Gulf of Suez (a branch of the Red Sea), near the southern terminus of the Suez Canal, having the same boundaries as Suez governorate. It has three harbors, Adabya, Ain Sukhna and Port Tawfiq, and extensive port facilities. Together they form a metropolitan area. Railway lines and highways connect the city with Cairo, Port Said, and Ismailia. Suez has a petrochemical plant, and its oil refineries have pipelines carrying the finished product to Cairo.
History
Early Islamic era
In the 7th century AD a town named "Kolzum" stood just north of the site of present-day Suez and served as eastern terminus of a canal built by Amr ibn al-'As linking the Nile River and the Red Sea. Kolzum's trade fell following the closure of the canal in 770 by the second Abbasid caliph al-Mansur to prevent his enemies in Arabia from accessing supplies from Egypt and the lands north of it. Nonetheless, the town benefited from the trade that remained between Egypt and Arabia. By 780 al-Mansur's successor al-Mahdi restored part of the canal. The Qarmatians led by Hasan ibn Ahmad defeated a Fatimid army headed by Gawhar al-Siqilli at Kolzum in 971 and thereby captured the town. Following his defeat in Cairo by al-Siqilli at the end of that year, Hasan and his forces retreated to Arabia via Kolzum. Suez was situated nearby and served as a source of drinking water for Kolzum according to Arab traveler al-Muqaddasi who visited in 986.
